The Lonely Land
A.J.M. Smith
Cedar and jagged fir
uplift sharp barbs
against the gray
and cloud-piled sky;
and in the bay
blown spume and windrift
and thin, bitter spray
snap
at the whirling sky;
and the pine trees
lean one way.
A wild duck calls
to her mate,
and ragged
and passionate tones
stagger and fall,
and recover,
and stagger and fall,
on these stones -
are lost
in the lapping of water
on smooth, flat stones.
This is a beauty
of dissonance,
this resonance
of stony strand,
this smoky cry
curled over a black pine
like a broken
and wind-battered branch
when the wind
bends the tops of the pine
like a broken
and wind-battered branch
when the wind
bends the tops of the pines
and curdles the sky
from the north.
This is the beauty
of strength
broken by strength
and still strong
In his poem "The Lonely Land," A.J.M. Smith paints a picture of a landscape filled with both beauty and conflict. Repetition in the second verse is used in conjunction with personification to drive home the reader the feeling of loneliness and abandonment. He effectively uses imagery and language to suggest that beauty can be derived from conflict.Smith immediately begins his painting with a sense of conflict: He paints a "grey and cloud-piled sky" and fills the soft image with cedar and "jagged fir," a much more bold and harsh image. In the third stanza, whilst the reader is at odds with him or herself, the speaker brings in a sense of hope and optimism.

Samuel De Champlain

http://bp1.blogger.com/_zaVUPktVwB8/R5xhRW8a-

1a. Find a picture of Samuel De Champlain. What does he look like? Explain the picture in 5-8 sentences.Answer the following questions in 5-8 sentences to get full marks. Be careful of spelling and grammar.
USE YOUR OWN WORDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

On your left, you can see a person who named Samuel De Champlain. He have a long curly hair.Under his thin eyebrows,it is his big eyes. The nose is straight like other foreigners in the west.He did not have a lot of beard filled his face. The beard is only under the nose ande the mouth. It is easy to see that heis a smart person.

1b. Remember to answer 1a before you do this question. Who is he? What is his nationality? What is his background?

(c. 1575[1] – 25 of December 1635), "The Father of New France", was a French navigator, geographer, cartographer, draughtsman, soldier, explorer, ethnologist, diplomat, chronicler, and the founder of Quebec City on July 3, 1608, of which he was the administrator for the rest of his life.

Backgrond:He was born in Brouage, near Rochefort, in the Province of Saintonge, France: Champlain reported to be "Brouageais" (to come from Brouage) into the title of his 1603 book. He belonged to either a Protestant family, or a tolerant one, in a Protestant region but a catholic city, as his Old Testament first name (Samuel) was not usually given to Catholic children.

2. What is his relationship with Canada? Why is he important to Canada?

Samuel is important to Canada because he was a French explorer and navigator who mapped much of northeastern North America and started a settlement in Quebec. Champlain also discovered the lake named for him and was important in establishing and administering the French colonies in the New World. He was an early explorer of the great lakes, associated waterways and an excellent cartographer. His explorations led to the founding or Qubect City and he more or less singlehandedly, opened up the north american fur trade. That in itself led to further exploration by others and the establishment of fur trading posts further and further into the interior.

3. When did he explore? What was happening during history at this time?

On his first trip to North America, Champlain arrived on board the Bonne-Renommée (the Good Fame) on 15 March 1603.1603 traditionally marks the point at which ‘English’ and ‘Scottish’ history became ‘British’ history, with the coronation of James VI of Scotland as James I of England. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were a period during which the “Three Kingdoms” of Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) along with Ireland became more closely economically, socially, politically and culturally tied together, sometimes peaceably and sometimes through great spasms of violent conflict. Together their regionally oriented economies and societies became linked to the furthest parts of the globe in large part through the growth of London. By the nineteenth century, the sun famously never set on the British Empire and it would be at the center of two World Wars in the twentieth.

4. Where did he explore? Find a map to help you answer this question. Post the map here and then explain.
He explored the New Franch. On March 29, 1613, arrived back in New France, he first ensured that his new royal commission be proclaimed. Champlain set out on May 27 to continue his exploration of the Huron country and in hopes of finding the "northern sea" he had heard about (probably Hudson Bay). He traveled the Ottawa River, later giving the first description of this areaIt was in June that he met with Tessouat, the Algonquin chief of Allumettes Island, and offered to build the tribe a fort if they were to move from the area they occupied, with its poor soil, to the locality of the Lachine Rapids
5. Why did he explore? What were his reasons for exploration?
He wanted to discover a water route across the American continent!
He was the founder of Quebec with out him there would be no Quebec
He was sent by King Henri IV and set up trading posts. He set up the posts Port Royal, and Kebec (Algonquin word for Quebec, where the river narrows). I think that he was sent mostly to make settlements for France, to gain more land.
6. How did he explore? What transportation methods did he use?
In January, 1599, he sailed in command of this vessel for the West Indies, and during two years and a half visited many of the islands, landed at Vera Cruz, proceeded inland as far as the city of Mexico, and returned by way of Panama, where he conceived the plan of a ship-canal across the isthmus, reaching Spain in March, 1601.
Bonus1. Can you find a statue or a monument of Samuel De Champlain? Post it here and explain in 3-5 sentences.

Flat Earth

www.chinahistoryforum.org/.../t28401.html
In ancient times, the chinese viewed the heaven as 'rounded' while the earth as "square". This was known as "Tian Yuan Di Fang 天圆地方" and influenced various aspect of chinese culture. For instance, depiction of heaven is always 'rounded', while depiction of land is always square. This was especially seen in traditional chinese architecture. We can se the mountains, trees in the flat. The sky is round.

http://www.alaska.net/~clund/e_djublonskopf/Flatearthsociety.htm
<1>If it is a sphere, the surface of a large body of water must be curved. The Johnsons have checked the surfaces of Lake Tahoe and the Salton Sea (a shallow salt lake in southern California near the Mexican border) without detecting any curvature."
<2>"there are rivers that flow for hundreds of miles towards the level of the sea without falling more than a few feet — notably, the Nile, which, in a thousand miles, falls but a foot. A level expanse of this extent is quite incompatible with the idea of the Earth's 'convexity'"; and that an aeronaut at the highest possible altitude will see what appears to be a concave surface "this being exactly what is to be expected of a surface that is truly level, since it is the nature of level surfaces to appear to rise to a level with the eye of the observer".

3. Do you think human beings have a false concept of the earth and the universe today?
Yes.Because human haven't got enough power to discovered more about space clearly. They only look space with equipment. We don't konow is the equipment reflect the fact,Is there any error?

Why is Jacques Cartier important for the history of Canada?

Jacques Cartier was the first European to describe and map[1] the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River, which he named "The Country of Canadas", after the Iroquois names for the two big settlements he saw at Stadacona (Quebec City) and at Hochelaga (Montreal Island).

When was Cartier sent to Canada? Why was he sent to explore? Who sent him?

In 1534, the king of France sent Cartier to explore the recently discovered "New World." Cartier's job was to look for two things: gold and a passage through North America that would lead to Asia.

Find a map of one of his voyages. Post it here and explain his voyage. Where did he go?

What is scurvy?

Scurvy is a disease resulting from a deficiency of vitamin C, which is required for the synthesis of collagen in humans. The chemical name for vitamin C, ascorbic acid, is derived from the Latin name of scurvy, scorbutus. Scurvy leads to the formation of spots on the skin, spongy gums, and bleeding from the mucous membranes. The spots are most abundant on the thighs and legs, and a person with the ailment looks pale, feels depressed, and is partially immobilized. In advanced scurvy there are open, suppurating wounds and loss of teeth.

What happened to Donnaconna?

Here is an addendum to my earlier account of Donnaconna, the Huron chief whom Jacques Cartier took back to France in the 1530s: James Axtell reports that in May 1536 Cartier invited Donnaconna, two other chiefs, and two Indian interpreters - Donnaconna's sons Domagaya and Taignoagny - to meet him at the French camp near the town of Stadacona, then abducted all five men. According to Axtell, Canadian Indians (Hurons or Iroquois) had previously given the explorers five boys as "tokens of alliance" and, presumably, for training in the French language, so when Cartier sailed for France later that year he had ten Indians on his ship. When in 1541 Cartier returned to Quebec to establish a (short-lived) mining colony, he told the Stadaconans that his Indian companions had all married and become "great lords" in Europe, and no longer wished to return home. This may have been partially true, and (as I mentioned in a previous post) the Huron travelers may have enjoyed very good living conditions in France. For diplomatic reasons, however, Cartier declined to mention that nine of the ten travelers (including Donnaconna) had in fact died during the preceding half decade, and so could not be consulted on their future travel plans.

How would you feel if you were Donnaconna or the Iroquois people? Would you be friends with the French after this experience?

French are so rude.. The must stay with tiger eveyday~~~I don't want to stay with then...I'm a good girl~~~
